Are Ambulance Accidents Common?
Ambulance accidents are rare and often the fault of the ambulance driver.
What Are the Causes of Ambulance Accidents?
- Not all transport ambulance drivers are trained properly, if at all.
- NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law statutes and company rules are often violated because ambulance drivers think they can violate the law just because they’re driving an ambulance and
- Some ambulance drivers are simply negligent.
Most ambulance accidents involve intersection collisions when an ambulance runs a red light or stop sign. But like car accidents, there are many other causes of ambulance accidents.
We were contacted by a woman who wrote, “my husband and I were rear ended by a NY Presbyterian ambulance.” As in 99% of rear-end auto accidents, the driver of that ambulance is 100% at fault.
This Ambulance Ran a Red Light
I took this photo of a Senior Care ambulance, which is a transport ambulance, transporting a patient and not responding to an emergency or 911 call. I first saw the ambulance near North Shore-LIJ/Northwell Hospital on Long Island. The ambulance had its lights and siren on when it ran a red light.
Then, the ambulance entered the Long Island Expressway, and I was behind it. I was surprised that the ambulance was traveling at 40 mph on the expressway, still with its lights and siren on.
Two exits later, I encountered traffic, and the ambulance caught up. We both exited the expressway, and I took this photo as the ambulance ran through another red light.
Obviously, there was no emergency since the ambulance was traveling at only 40 mph, which is the minimum speed limit on the Long Island Expressway.
Running a red light, even with emergency lights and a siren on, is dangerous and not even legal when there is no emergency. The patient’s health and life were risked for no reason.
As a personal injury lawyer in New York and an Aux. Police Officer, I am appalled by the transport ambulance drivers I see routinely disregarding safety and the law. Fortunately, it is very rare that fire, police, and volunteer emergency ambulance drivers disregard safety and the law.
Two days after I took this photo, there was an ambulance accident involving a Hunter Ambulance on the news that ran off the Parkway into a stone overpass, killing the driver and a patient. The ambulance was also a transport ambulance and did not have its lights and siren on, so presumably, there was no emergency.
When Do I Need a Personal Injury Lawyer for an Ambulance Accident?
You need a personal injury lawyer for an ambulance accident if you were a:
- Patient involved in an ambulance accident (you cannot be at fault and have a good case against either the ambulance, another vehicle, or both vehicles.)
- Pedestrian hit or struck by an ambulance.
- Driver or passenger in a car hit by an ambulance.
We want to represent you if you were injured in or by an ambulance accident. Call us no matter what your injury is because, very often, even minor injuries are worth a lot of money. See if your injury is a serious injury and what an injury can be worth.
When you have an accident with an ambulance, it will either be against a private company with a lot of insurance or a government with no limit on what they may have to pay.
Who Pays Your Ambulance Bill When You’re Injured In an Accident?
Whether you were injured because of an ambulance accident when you took an ambulance to the hospital or injured in a car accident and took an ambulance to the hospital, you will get billed by the ambulance.
Your ambulance bill will be paid by No-Fault insurance, but you only have 30 days to file a No-Fault claim and 45 days to send the ambulance bill to No-Fault, so call us immediately.
Don’t let yourself be chased into collections by the ambulance like this patient.
What Is the Personal Injury Legal Fee for an Ambulance Accident?
Our personal injury legal fee is only 1/3 of what we collect for you paid at the end of your personal injury case. There is no fee if we do not collect money for you.
We will advance the case expenses for you, and you are not responsible for any case expenses unless and until we collect money for you.
In the event of the wrongful death of a loved one from a fatal ambulance crash, we provide free legal services for the appointment of an estate Administrator and guardianship proceedings if there are children.
